Hidden in plain sight, the Turmhügel in Nuremberg whispers secrets of a vanished world. This unassuming mound, once a mighty castle, witnessed the ebb and flow of power, the clash of ambitions, and the rise and fall of empires. The Turmhügel, now just a grassy knoll and a moat, was once the heart of the Burgraves’ Castle. The castle stood proudly beside the Imperial Castle, a symbol of the Burgraves’ authority. The Hohenzollern family, the Burgraves of Nuremberg, held sway here. Their power grew, culminating in their acquisition of the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1411. But their stronghold on the Turmhügel wouldn’t last. The city of Nuremberg, thriving under its newfound freedom, chafed under the Burgraves’ control. The relationship between the city and the Burgraves became strained, marked by disputes and skirmishes. In 1367, the city built a wall to restrict the Burgraves’ access. In 1377, they built the Luginsland tower to keep watch over the castle. Then in 1420, the Burgraves’ Castle met a fiery end, attacked by Duke Louis VII of Bavaria and reduced to ruins. In 1427, the city purchased the remnants of the castle from Frederick I, Elector of Brandenburg, finally asserting full control over the Turmhügel. The castle stones were repurposed, leaving only the earthworks and the moat as a testament to its existence. The Turmhügel remains as a quiet witness to this power struggle, a reminder that even the mightiest structures can crumble and return to the earth. Its grassy slopes invite us to reflect on the passage of time and the changing fortunes of those who once commanded this strategic site.
