Nestled in the heart of Seoul, Suyu 1-dong whispers tales of transformation. Once a peaceful village known as Suyu-ri, Suyu 1-dong has witnessed a fascinating evolution. Originally part of Goyang County in Gyeonggi Province, Suyu-ri became part of Seoul’s Seongbuk District in 1949. The quaint village officially transitioned into the Suyu-dong neighborhood we know today in 1950. Suyu 1-dong, along with other dongs, was separated from Seongbuk to create Dobong District in 1973. Then, in 1995, Suyu 1-dong found its final home as part of Gangbuk District. Today, Suyu 1-dong stands as a testament to Seoul’s ever-changing urban landscape. As of 2008, this vibrant neighborhood was home to over 71,000 people, occupying an area of 2.66 square kilometers. The name, Suyu-dong, itself evokes a sense of tranquility. The Korean characters translate to “water willow neighborhood,” perhaps hinting at a serene past.
