Have you heard of a chedi in the middle of the water? Let’s talk about the Phra Samut Chedi District. This district in Samut Prakan Province, Thailand, takes its name from the magnificent Wat Phra Samut Chedi. The temple’s most prominent feature is its namesake chedi, Phra Samut Chedi. King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai, also known as Rama II, began construction of this chedi in 1827. It was completed during the reign of King Rama III. The chedi initially stood on an island in the Chao Phraya River. This explains its popular nickname, “Phra Chedi Klang Nam”, meaning “Chedi in the middle of the water”. Over time, the river deposited sediment around the island. This eventually connected the island to the riverbank. The Phra Samut Chedi District itself was established much later. It began as a minor district in 1984. Then it was elevated to full district status in 1991. The Phra Samut Chedi District’s history is intertwined with the chedi itself. Every year, around October, a grand nine-day celebration takes place at Wat Phra Samut Chedi. This festival is a major event in Samut Prakan, honoring the chedi and its historical significance. Within the Phra Samut Chedi District, you can also explore the Chulachomklao Fort. Built in 1819 at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, this fort played a critical role in the Paknam Incident of 1893. Another attraction is the HTMS Maeklong. This decommissioned training ship of the Royal Thai Navy now rests within the district. The Phra Samut Chedi District and its namesake chedi offer a captivating blend of history, culture, and riverside charm.
