Marvelous mosaics! That’s what I call the walls of the Panagia Gorgoepikoos. But this isn’t just any church. This is the Little Metropolis a hidden gem in Athens.

This unassuming church stands proudly in Mitropoleos Square. It’s a testament to resilience and a captivating blend of history. It sits beside the grand Metropolitan Cathedral. The Little Metropolis is much more than meets the eye. It was built on the remains of a temple to Eileithyia. That’s a goddess of childbirth. Can you imagine the rituals that once unfolded here?

Scholars have debated its construction date for centuries. Some place it in the 9th century under Empress Irene. Others suggest the 13th century under Michael Choniates. Recent research indicates a much later date possibly even the early Ottoman era. This is because the church is built almost entirely of spolia. These are salvaged stones from earlier buildings. They range from Classical Antiquity to the 12th or even 13th centuries. A unique detail a historian even found an inscription from the spolia in the Ancient Agora. It shows that the church was constructed after 1436. This makes the Panagia Gorgoepikoos incredibly unique in Byzantine architecture.

Originally dedicated to Panagia Gorgoepikoos after a miraculous icon it earned its nickname. It’s because it was within the Metropolitan’s residence. Following the Greek War of Independence the church was abandoned. For a time it housed Athens’ public library. Later it was rededicated. First to Christ the Saviour then to Saint Eleutherios. Restoration in 1856 returned it to its original state. The bell tower was removed.

The Little Metropolis is small. Just 7.6 meters long and 12.2 meters wide. Its Byzantine layout is a cross-in-square design. It has a three-aisled nave with a central aisle taller than the others. Its octagonal dome was once supported by columns now replaced with piers. The walls are exceptional. They’re constructed entirely of reused marble spolia. Undecorated masonry reaches the window height. Ninety sculptures adorn the area above. It’s a stunning display of reused art. Unlike other Byzantine churches of the time no bricks are used. The exception is the dome. Frescoes once filled the interior but only one remains. A depiction of the Panagia in the entrance apse. The Panagia Gorgoepikoos truly is a living museum.

Recently the Little Metropolis held a significant event. It hosted the lying-in-state of Constantine II. Thousands mourned the last King of the Hellenes. The church played a small part in a moment of national mourning. It is remarkable how this small church has witnessed centuries of history. It continues to be a significant place in modern Athens. Its past and present intertwine a poignant story in stone. The Panagia Gorgoepikoos isn’t merely a place of worship. It’s a living testament to time.
