A thousand eyes watch over us. That’s the legend of Angala Parameshwari Goddess Temple. Right here before us stands this temple a place of immense spiritual significance.
The Angala Parameshwari Goddess Temple is deeply rooted in Tamil Nadu’s culture. She is a fierce village deity. Angala Parameshwari is associated with Goddess Parvati. She is also called Adiparasakthi an avatar of the supreme power Shakti. Legend says that she is the protector of the people. Her thousand eyes are always vigilant. Devotees affectionately call her Amma meaning mother in Tamil.
One story tells of Lord Brahma’s infatuation with an Apsara named Thilothama. Brahma’s attraction led him to grow a fifth head to track her. This terrified Thilothama. She sought refuge with Lord Shiva who removed Brahma’s fifth head. Angered Brahma cursed Shiva. Parvati then took the form of Angalamman. She stopped Brahma’s cursed head. The Angala Parameshwari Temple in Malaiyanur Tamil Nadu commemorates this event. This temple is considered a Shakti Peetha. It’s believed that Devi Sati’s right hand fell there when Shiva wandered with her body.
The temple’s iconography is striking. Angala Parameshwari is often depicted with a lotus in one hand signifying peace. A sword and trident are held in her other hands. A lion is her mount and a thousand red dots adorn her forehead. The dots represent her thousand watchful eyes. In earlier times worship took place outside the village. The ten-day Mayana Kollai festival in the Tamil month of Maasi February-March is spectacular. The Goddess is adorned with finery. A grand procession allows devotees to glimpse the deity. Priests release wooden arrows from chariots symbolizing the Goddess’s power. Devotees eagerly await blessings. The Angala Parameshwari Temple in Andhra Pradesh is the largest dedicated to the Goddess. Several temples are in Chennai including those in Choolaimedu and Choolai. Other temples exist in Trichirapalli Ariyalur and Thiruvarur districts.
People believe worshiping Angala Parameshwari provides relief from illness and evil spirits. The mantra Om Shakti is used to invoke her blessings. The temple offers various rituals like fire ceremonies abishekam pooja and yantra and mantra.
