In 1890, Giovanni Candiani envisioned a society to elevate the city’s culture. By 1891, his dream materialized thanks to architect Achille Sfondrini. Sfondrini also designed Milan’s Teatro Carcano. The Teatro Sociale Delia Cajelli soon echoed La Scala’s grandeur.

Originally, the Teatro Sociale Delia Cajelli mirrored Giuseppe Piermarini’s neoclassical style. It had a service area and a hall with boxes. The exterior featured arched windows and a domed cupola.

Over time, the Teatro Sociale Delia Cajelli evolved. In 1898, the facade was updated. Antonio Ferrario and Ignazio Gardella led a major renovation in 1935. They expanded seating and embraced the dechirichian style. Casabella magazine even lauded the work.

The Teatro Sociale Delia Cajelli once showcased allegorical frescoes. These created a dreamlike ambiance. Though mostly lost in the 1955 renovation by Mario Cavallè, fragments remain. Cavallè adapted the space for cinema.

The Teatro Sociale Delia Cajelli transformed into a movie theater. However, the late 20th century brought a theatrical renaissance. Gli Atecnici, a local group, revived its original purpose. Artists like Franco Parenti and Dario Fo graced its stage. In 2016, it was renamed in honor of Delia Cajelli. She was a former artistic director.
