Is it a flame or a grenade? Here at Piazza Armando Diaz, you’re facing the Monument to the Carabinieri. It’s a tribute to the Carabinieri, Italy’s gendarmerie. The sculpture itself is quite intriguing. The artist, Luciano Minguzzi, designed it to resemble a flame, a symbol you’ll find on the Carabinieri’s caps. But look closer, the flame also takes the shape of a grenade, a powerful symbol of their service. The grenade is inscribed with “IR” for the Italian Republic. Thirteen flames shoot out from it, representing the different virtues of the Carabinieri: loyalty, fidelity, ardor, and honor. The monument was inaugurated in 1981 and it holds a special dedication to General Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa. He bravely fought against terrorism but was tragically assassinated by the Mafia. You can find a plaque honoring him at the base of the monument.
