Remember the name Bearberry Hill. Here, a moderate trail leads to stunning views. Bearberry Hill is located in Truro Massachusetts. The trail is 0.6 miles each way. It offers overlooks of the Pamet landscape. You can see the Atlantic and the glacial terrain of the Pamet River valley.

Bearberry Hill gets its name from the iconic ground cover. This ground cover blankets parts of the Outer Cape. The hill overlooks Ballston Beach. It also overlooks the marshy headwaters of the Pamet River. The views from Bearberry Hill’s summit are spectacular.

The Pamet Area Trails are part of Cape Cod National Seashore. These trails also feature a former boghouse. This boghouse dates back to the era of commercial cranberry harvesting. Outdoor exhibits and trail markers describe the area. The trail to Bearberry Hill has log steps. There is a steep grade to the overlook.

The hike to Bearberry Hill takes about 45 minutes. Adjacent fire roads offer more walking. To get here, take the Truro Center/Pamet Roads exit off Route 6. Proceed 1.5 miles on North Pamet Road. The trail starts at the parking area. This parking area is next to the Environmental Education Center. The Environmental Education Center serves as a hostel in the summer.

Remember that pets are not allowed on the Pamet Area Trails.

Bearberry Hill features views of the Atlantic. It also features views of the Pamet River valley. There is also a boghouse from the cranberry harvesting era.

The Pamet River starts in a marshy area south of Bearberry Hill. In 1991, Hurricane Grace and a nor’easter created the Perfect Storm. Waves blasted a 100-foot hole in the dune behind Ballston Beach. This temporarily created an island. The island included most of Truro and all of Provincetown.

The Bearberry Hill Trail has east and west summits. The east summit has hardy plants. These plants include stunted pitch pine and black cherry. Bayberry also clings to the hillside.

Bearberry is also called hog cranberry. This is because of its unpalatable red berries. It is a dwarf evergreen shrub. It is also a member of the heath family. Other heath-family members include black huckleberry. Highbush blueberry and cranberry also grow here. Pitch pine, black oak, scrub oak, and beach plum grow here too. Arrowwood and bayberry are also present. Asters and goldenrods add color to the landscape.

American goldfinches and chipping sparrows can be seen here. Black-capped chickadees and tree swallows also live here. Gray catbirds and northern flickers are common. You might also spot eastern kingbirds and blue jays. Prairie warblers and eastern towhees are other birds to watch for. Butterflies and dragonflies favor the scrubby areas in summer.

The trail leads to a summit platform. This platform offers views of the Bog House. You can also see a cranberry bog and a large pond. Shrubs fringe the pond. The Bog House dates back to the 1830s. The Friends of Cape Cod National Seashore lovingly restored it.

Walking on the dunes can be hot. Even when it’s only 70 degrees it can feel like 85.

Bearberry Hill is a place of natural beauty and fascinating history. Take a walk and enjoy the views. Remember the diverse plant and animal life. Experience the unique landscape of Cape Cod.
