Lost in the labyrinthine hutongs of Beijing’s ancient heart stands a testament to China’s rich history. This is Jicheng the City of Ji. Its story is woven into the very fabric of Beijing itself. For over three thousand years this area has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It has been a strategic center a provincial capital and even a sovereign capital.

Imagine the Yellow Emperor and the Yan Emperor uniting their tribes here near Banquan. Their victory opened North China to settlement. The sage-king Yao also founded a town in this region. This place You or Youzhou would later become one of Beijing’s historical names. The very soil beneath our feet holds echoes of these legendary beginnings. Archaeological evidence confirms settlements dating back to the 11th century BC.

The City of Ji flourished as the capital of the ancient states of Ji and Yan. It lay along vital north-south trade routes. Convenient for trade caravans it boasted a steady water supply from the Lotus Pool. This strategic location made it an important center for centuries. Yan conquered Ji eventually establishing its capital here. Beijing is also known as Yanjing or the Yan Capital a lasting tribute to this influential state.

During the Qin Dynasty Ji became the seat of Guangyang Commandery. The First Emperor himself visited. To protect the frontier he ordered sections of the Great Wall built nearby. The Han Dynasty followed maintaining Ji’s importance. It served as the provincial capital of Youzhou. Royal tombs unearthed in the area testify to the region’s continued significance.

Under the Liao Dynasty Ji was renamed Nanjing the Southern Capital. The city grew dramatically under their rule. The Niujie Mosque and Tianning Temple both stand as reminders of this era. The Song Dynasty attempted to recapture Nanjing but were defeated at the Battle of Gaoliang River.

The Jin Dynasty took control and renamed the city Yanjing. They further expanded the city making it a major capital for over sixty years. The city grew immensely its population swelling with both Han and nomadic peoples. The Mongols under Genghis Khan eventually conquered the city looting and burning it before Kublai Khan established his new capital Dadu.

Dadu the Grand Capital became the capital of all of China under the Yuan Dynasty. Kublai Khan transformed Yanjing incorporating the old Daning Palace into his new capital. Its impressive architecture and layout influenced the design of later cities. This site became a cosmopolitan hub attracting travelers and scholars from across Asia.

Under the Ming Dynasty Beijing’s status as capital was solidified. The Yongle Emperor moved the capital here undertaking a massive construction program. Iconic buildings such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven were built during this time. This construction also included much of the Great Wall. Beijing’s position as a major power center was secured. The city became the world’s largest for periods during this era.

The Qing Dynasty continued Beijing’s reign as China’s capital. They added to the city’s grandeur creating magnificent palaces and gardens. Beijing Mandarin became the official national language. The city’s growth continued but was also marked by conflict. The Boxer Rebellion and the Second Opium War left their mark on the city.

As we stand here today at the site of Jicheng the City of Ji remember the profound layers of history beneath our feet. This is more than just a location. It’s a living chronicle of empires trade and cultural exchange. It is the heartbeat of Beijing.
