Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Glasgow lies St James’ Parish Church, a structure whose very stones whisper tales of transition and resilience. St James’ wasn’t always a Pollok landmark. Its journey began in the late 19th century as Titwood Parish Church in Pollokshields, a testament to the Neo-Gothic architectural style envisioned by Henry Edward Clifford. Imagine the bustling streets of Pollokshields in 1895, horse-drawn carriages clattering past the newly erected church, its stained-glass windows casting colorful patterns onto the pavement. St James’, then Titwood, served its community for decades. However, changing times and shifting populations led to the union of Titwood and Pollokshields congregations in 1941. The once-vibrant Titwood Parish Church fell silent. Its story, however, was far from over. In the post-war era, a new community in Pollok sought a spiritual home. The decision was made to relocate and rebuild Titwood Parish Church. Stone by stone, the church was painstakingly dismantled, transported across Glasgow, and resurrected in Pollok between 1951 and 1953. This monumental task, overseen by architects Thomson, McCrea, and Sanders, breathed new life into the grand old structure. The church found its new purpose as St James’ Parish Church. The Pollok congregation, after worshipping in temporary spaces, finally had a permanent sanctuary. They celebrated the reopening of St James’ on September 3, 1953. Today, St James’ stands as a symbol of both continuity and transformation. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of change, history can be preserved and repurposed, continuing to serve its community in new and meaningful ways. It embodies the spirit of Glasgow, a city constantly evolving yet always anchored in its rich past.
