Hidden among the rolling hills of Kawachinagano stands Kongō-ji a temple steeped in history and brimming with treasures. This isn’t just any Buddhist temple. It’s the head temple of the Shingon Omuro sect. Imagine the weight of centuries resting on its aged stones.

Kongō-ji’s story begins long ago. Legend whispers of one of Emperor Ashoka’s 84000 stupas having once stood on this very land. The temple itself was founded during the Tenpyō era between 729 and 749. Emperor Shōmu commissioned its construction. The priest Gyōki oversaw the project. This marked a significant moment in Buddhist history in Japan.

Fast forward to the Heian period. Kōbō-Daishi Kūkai the founder of Shingon Buddhism is said to have studied here. This lends even more significance to Kongō-ji’s place in religious history. For over four centuries the temple thrived. Then it fell into ruin. Yet hope arrived in the form of the Koya-san priest Akan. He revived Kongō-ji in the late Heian period. Supported by Emperor Go-Shirakawa and his sister Hachijō-in Akiko Akan restored the temple to its former glory. He brought a revered image of Kōbō-Daishi a drawing by Prince Takaoka. This image now resides in the Miei Hall.

Kongō-ji became unique for its time. Women were allowed to pray here unlike many other temples. This made it known as Women’s Koya-san. The temple’s fortunes intertwined with Imperial power. During the Nanboku-chō period Kongō-ji became associated with Emperor Go-Daigo. It even served as the base for the Southern Court. Three emperors of the Northern Court were even imprisoned within its walls at the Kanzō-in subtemple. Emperor Kōgon and Emperor Sukō were released in 1357. Emperor Kōmyō had been released earlier in 1355.

Kongō-ji’s economic prosperity was remarkable. The production of rice charcoal lumber and amanosake (a type of sake) fueled its wealth. At its peak it boasted over 90 sub-temples. Under the patronage of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi the temple flourished. By the end of the Edo period it owned 307 koku of land. This explains the remarkable number of cultural properties preserved within the temple’s walls. The buildings were repaired extensively. This happened in 1606 by Toyotomi Hideyori and again in 1700 by order of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.

The story of Kongō-ji continues to the present. Extensive restoration works were undertaken from 2009 to 2017. This included the repair of the main sculptures. These sculptures were designated as a National Treasure. The restoration cost a total of 1.65 billion yen. This was jointly funded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Kawachinagano city.

Today Kongō-ji stands as a testament to perseverance and faith. Its history echoes through its many designated cultural properties. These include five National Treasures and 29 Important Cultural Properties. Visit Kongō-ji and you will experience the tangible legacy of centuries of history. You will step into a world where faith art and imperial power intertwine. Kongō-ji is more than just a temple it is a living chronicle. It is a place where the past present and future merge in harmony.
