Is it true that this church echoes with the stories of a growing community? Gethsemane Parish. It stands as a testament to faith and architectural vision. Let’s step inside to uncover its story.

In the 1960s, Mandaue transformed from farmlands into an industrial city. The population boomed. Residents sought a local parish. Existing churches were too far. This sparked a desire for their own place of worship.

On June 7, 1978, Archbishop Julio Cardinal Rosales established the Catholic Church of Christ of Agony. It became known as Gethsemane Parish. The name? It wasn’t just a random choice. Most parishes were named after their towns. But residents wanted something unique. Cardinal Rosales had the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Agonizing Christ. The new parish adopted Gethsemane.

Gethsemane is a suburban area in Jerusalem. The Agony of Christ took place there. The word Gethsemane comes from Aramaic. “Gathshemani” means a place for an oil press. It reflects the industrial spirit of the parish. An old magazine said: “Thus Gethsemane becomes the parish, as the parish became Gethsemane. Nothing could have been more significant.”

Bethie Carino recalls early days. Masses were held in an open space. Tables and chairs dotted the bare quadrangle. Over time, renovations transformed the space. Wooden structures gave way to steel. A new church emerged.

Today, Gethsemane Parish showcases modern design. The late Monsignor Virgilio Yap was the architect. He considered capacity, ventilation and acoustics. Yap envisioned an open arch. It opens to an exterior garden. This design was economical. It eliminated the need for a back wall. The “Christ of the Agony of the Garden” image fits the natural setting.

Inside, the pews slope downward toward the altar. The background resembles a Jerusalem door. The church has two levels. Sunlight streams through the windows. This ensures lighting and ventilation. The facade features a protective overhang. Stained glass windows adorn the upper walls. A clerestory roof was recently added.

A circular tabernacle stands beside the altar. It complements the arch. A sculpture of the Agony in the Garden Image of Christ is placed behind the altar. The crucifix hangs above the arch. Instead of simple beams, Msgr. Yap designed multiple crosses. This represents the “multiplicity of the sins of mankind.” It was carved in Paete Laguna. The garden and grilled entrance provide fresh air. A spacious parking lot lies outside.

The parish celebrates St. John the Apostle every December 27.

Gethsemane Parish has set up activities for Holy Week. Churchgoers can buy crucifixes, candles and rosaries.

Gethsemane Parish is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of community. It’s a blend of faith and art. As you leave, remember the oil press. Remember the agony and the garden. Remember Gethsemane.
