Consider this place a stage. The Happy Warrior Playground has many acts. It is located at Amsterdam Avenue between 98th and 99th streets. This playground is more than swings and slides. It is a place filled with history and culture.
Happy Warrior Playground is officially named after Al Smith. He was a New York Governor from 1873 to 1944. People called him “the happy warrior”. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave him this nickname. It came from William Wordsworth’s poem. The poem celebrates diligence and perseverance.
But Happy Warrior Playground has other names too. Some call it “Rock Steady Park”. Others know it as “The Goat Courts”. These names tell stories of basketball and breakdancing legends.
Earl Manigault was nicknamed “The Goat”. He played basketball here in the 1960s and 1970s. Manigault became a street basketball legend. After his death in 1998, the city honored him. They named the basketball courts “The Goat Courts”. Manigault’s signature move was the “double dunk”. He dunked the ball, caught it, and dunked it again. Despite his struggles with drug use, he turned his life around. Manigault became a counselor and coach. He even organized a basketball tournament. It has been held every year since 1971.
The Rock Steady Crew also left their mark here. This b-boying crew practiced near the basketball courts in the early 1980s. Because of them, some people call this place “Rock Steady Park”. The Rock Steady Crew was a hip-hop group. They started in the Bronx in 1977. Crazy Legs and B-Boy Fresh created the Manhattan branch. The New York Times called them the “foremost breakdancing group in the world”. Malcolm McLaren’s 1983 video featured the Rock Steady Crew. It showed them break-dancing in Happy Warrior Playground.
Artist BUA spent time at Rock Steady Park. He was inspired by Manhattan street life. BUA incorporated what he saw in his art. He created Distorted Urban Realism.
Today, Happy Warrior Playground is still a vibrant place. PS 163 students use it for recess. They climb, run, and play. The playground has structures for different ages. There are open spaces in the sun and shade.
The Happy Warrior Playground is more than just a playground. It is a place where sports, music, and art come together. It honors those who have left their mark. It is a place where anyone can find their own stage to shine. Whether you call it Happy Warrior Playground, Rock Steady Park, or The Goat Courts, remember the stories it holds.
