The history of the Ruínas da Capela de Santa Bárbara goes back even further. In the 17th century Gaspar Rebelo de Vasconcelos and his wife Catarina Gonçalves left an alqueire of rye to the Confraria de Santa Bárbara in their will. This also included the painting of a panel.
In 1758 the Ruínas da Capela de Santa Bárbara was mentioned in the Parish Memories. Domingos do Amaral Tavares the parish priest signed this document indicating that the chapel belonged to the parishioners.
Over the centuries the Ruínas da Capela de Santa Bárbara has undergone several changes. In the 20th century major renovations altered the main façade. Despite these changes the chapel retains its charm and historical significance.
