Built in 1972 this ice rink has witnessed countless victories and defeats. It’s more than just a building. It’s a vibrant hub for Essen’s sporting community. Originally identical to ice rinks in Duisburg Herne and Iserlohn the Eissporthalle Essen-West has its own unique character now. Each rink evolved independently. It’s a testament to the changing needs of the city and its residents.
The Eissporthalle Essen-West boasts a main ice surface measuring 60 meters by 30 meters. There’s also a smaller training rink measuring 48 meters by 10 meters. Imagine the countless hours of practice. The tireless dedication of skaters and hockey players perfecting their skills. Before 2010 the arena could hold about 5500 spectators. Following renovations in 2010 however capacity was reduced to 3850. This was necessary to meet updated fire safety regulations. The renovation cost nearly four million euros. It was funded by Germany’s economic stimulus package II.
The Moskitos Essen a local Oberliga Nord ice hockey team calls the Eissporthalle Essen-West home. The arena also hosts figure skating competitions and school events. The Eisstocksportverein ES Essen plays its home games there too. The rink offers public skating sessions. They even hold disco nights. It’s a diverse venue that caters to a wide array of interests and age groups.
The Eissporthalle Essen-West even hosted the German Figure Skating Championships in 2015. For many years the arena served as a festive fireworks sales point during the Christmas and New Year’s season. It’s a testament to the building’s adaptability and integration within the community.
