Whispers of history linger in Collundtspark. Do you hear them?

Collundtspark in Flensburg is more than just a green space. It’s a living testament to centuries of change. Originally laid out sometime during the Baroque era it once boasted a much larger area. Imagine a 15-hectare expanse a true oasis. This beautiful park was nestled near the declining Duburg castle and overlooked the bustling city. Below the park lay St Gertrud’s Chapel and its cemetery a place of rest for generations.

The 1840s saw Collundtspark transformed into a lively summer garden offering refreshments and relaxation. The Collundtsche Gartenlaube a charming garden pavilion became a popular spot. Sadly it burned down in 1983. Even more intriguing was the existence of a bakery called Viktoria during World War I. History records that starving citizens plundered it in 1917 a stark reminder of harsh times.

For a time the park belonged to the Lorenzen Collundts family of ship owners and merchants. Their legacy is entwined with Collundtspark’s identity. By 1985 neglect had taken its toll. The park was incorporated into a city renewal project. A transformation began.

The renewal in 1991 and 1992 aimed for ecological urban renewal. It focused on improving the park for local residents. This revitalization project included a fascinating detail. Old foundations and cellar remains perhaps a century old were transformed into a modern artificial ruin. This striking structure evokes the romantic image of a castle ruin.

Today Collundtspark is much smaller than its former glory. It still offers a green heart. The park’s paths stretch from Schlossstrasse to Duburger Strasse an extension completed between 2007 and 2008. However the park faces challenges. Litter poses a threat to the park’s trees and natural areas. A reminder that even history needs ongoing care.

Collundtspark remains a small yet significant green space in Flensburg. It’s a quiet place where the past and present intertwine offering glimpses into the city’s rich and complex history. Take a moment appreciate its enduring charm.
