Saint Stephens Catholic Church

Elevated in grandeur, Saint Stephens Catholic Church has witnessed the ebb and flow of New Orleans history since its humble beginnings in 1849. Originally a mission church serving the German community in Jefferson City, the burgeoning congregation soon outgrew its modest structure. Under the visionary leadership of Father Anthony Verrina, the dream of a grander edifice began to take shape. Fundraising efforts commenced, and in 1871, construction began on the magnificent structure we see today, the Saint Stephens Catholic Church. The design, a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, drew inspiration from the Minden Cathedral in Germany. Imagine the scene as the church rose brick by brick, its intricate details slowly revealing a masterpiece. The hallenkirche floor plan allows light to stream through the stained glass, creating an ethereal ambiance. Look closely at those windows – designed and crafted by Franz Mayer of Munich, they add a vibrant touch of color and artistry to Saint Stephens Catholic Church. The church was completed in 1887, and the first mass was celebrated on December 26th, the Feast of St. Stephen. The consecration followed shortly after, on January 1st, 1888. But the story of Saint Stephens Catholic Church doesn’t end there. In 1905, the iconic spire was added. Designed by Favrot & Livaudais, the spire stands at an impressive 200 feet, its 24 sides wrapped in terracotta tiles. It’s a beacon, visible for miles across New Orleans. Inside, the 1939 pipe organ, one of the oldest in the city, fills the church with resonant music. In 2008, after Hurricane Katrina reshaped the city’s demographics, Saint Stephens Catholic Church merged with St. Henry’s and Our Lady of Good Counsel to form Good Shepherd Parish. In recent years, the Saint Stephens Catholic Church has undergone extensive restoration. The 2017-2018 project addressed water damage and enhanced the lighting, ensuring the church’s beauty will endure for generations to come. Then, in 2022, came a momentous occasion: Saint Stephens Catholic Church was designated a minor basilica, only the second in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
