The town’s name evolved from Xetafe to Jetafee. It changed to Jetaphe then Jetafe. Finally, it became Getafe.
Getafe’s proximity to Madrid spurred industrial development. This happened during the 20th and 21st centuries. Industrialization led to a population increase. It reached 170115 in 2011. Many residents now work or study within the city. New neighborhoods developed towards the end of the 20th century.
