“Can you imagine a church born from a pressing need?” That’s precisely the story of Chiesa di Santa Maria di Caravaggio. It stands here on Via Francesco Borromini. This sanctuary addresses the spiritual necessities of the growing population in the Porta Ticinese district.

Let’s step back to the early 1900s. The area around Porta Ticinese was booming. The existing churches couldn’t accommodate the increasing number of faithful. A temporary wooden church was erected in 1902. It had a crypt resembling the Sanctuary of Caravaggio. But it was not enough.

Don Giuseppe Cappelletti saw the need for a permanent structure. He wanted a sanctuary built of brick and stone. He commissioned architect Cecilio Arpesani for the task. Arpesani was known for his church designs in Milan. Cardinal Andrea Carlo Ferrari laid the first stone on June 24 1906. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Caravaggio was consecrated on May 1 1911.

Pause for a moment and admire the Romanesque Lombard architectural style. Arpesani drew inspiration from ancient Christian designs. He incorporated them into a modern structure. The result is this beautiful church.

Notice the bell tower. It wasn’t part of the original design. It was added between 1929 and 1930. Ugo Zanchetta designed it. The tower houses six bells. They were cast in 1949 by Carlo Ottolina.

Did you know that Chiesa di Santa Maria di Caravaggio holds a significant title? In 1979 Pope John Paul II elevated it to a minor basilica. This recognition speaks volumes about its religious importance.

Beneath the main church lies a spacious crypt. It is adorned with mosaics. The crypt houses a statue. It depicts the Madonna of Caravaggio. It also shows Giannetta. She was the young woman who witnessed the Virgin’s apparition.

Chiesa di Santa Maria di Caravaggio faced a challenge early on. The wooden church was inaugurated on September 7 1902. Cardinal Andrea Carlo Ferrari led a solemn procession. The statue of the Madonna and Giannetta moved from San Gottardo church. This marked a significant moment for the community.

Consider the evolution of this sacred space. From a temporary wooden structure to this basilica. It represents the community’s unwavering faith. It embodies their commitment to creating a worthy place of worship.

Take a moment to appreciate the continuity. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Caravaggio links ancient Christian traditions with modern artistry. It invites us to reflect on faith’s enduring power. It reminds us how communities come together to create sacred spaces.
