“Moo-ve” over folks. It is time to explore the story behind these gentle giants. We are standing before the Scottish Angus Cow and Calf Statue. These aren’t just any cows. They are a monumental bronze sculpture by Colorado artist Dan Ostermiller.

The Scottish Angus Cow and Calf Statue is located behind the Hamilton Building at the Denver Art Museum. The sculpture features a cow and her calf. Both are oversized and remarkably realistic. The cow stands thirteen feet tall. Her calf reaches ten feet.

These impressive figures pay homage to Colorado’s historic cattle culture. The artist created these sculptures three times larger than life. This makes them a truly impressive addition to the Denver Art Museum grounds.

Dan Ostermiller grew up in Cheyenne Wyoming. His father was a taxidermist. This early exposure gave Ostermiller a deep understanding of animal anatomy. His knowledge shines through in the realism of his bronze sculptures. He has created over 300 sculptures. Over 40 of these are of massive scale.

Creating such a monumental sculpture is no small feat. Ostermiller first created small-scale models. These maquettes were then divided into pieces. Each piece was enlarged. They served as models for casting the large bronze panels. Finally these panels were fitted together to create the animals.

The Scottish Angus Cow and Calf weighs 10000 pounds. It is Ostermiller’s largest work measuring 38 by 22 feet.

Leo Hindery Jr a Colorado ranch owner commissioned the Scottish Angus Cow and Calf. He wanted to commemorate his own herd of Scottish Angus cows. These cows lived in Larkspur Colorado. The piece was completed in 2001. Hindery donated it to the Denver Art Museum in 2006. He also provided money for its installation and care.

In 2009 the Scottish Angus Cow and Calf was voted the best public sculpture in Denver. The sculpture offers an element of humor. The placid realistic expressions evoke serenity. The importance of livestock in Colorado makes this piece approachable public art.

The Scottish Angus Cow and Calf is more than just a sculpture. It is a celebration of Colorado’s heritage. It is a testament to the artist’s skill. It is a beloved landmark for locals and visitors alike. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry and the story behind these gentle giants. And be sure to snap a photo. They are quite popular for climbing and posing.
