St. Katharine Drexel was baptized here. Yes, right here. It’s Assumption Vale Novitiate. Standing strong for over 170 years, this grand brick church is a monument to faith. It’s easy to see why people were so happy to see it built here in Philadelphia. The original church, dedicated in 1849, was a beacon of hope for the growing Catholic community. It was a time of tremendous growth and change, and the church played a significant role in shaping the city’s spiritual landscape. The community embraced the church with open arms. In fact, one-third of the funds came from non-Catholics, impressed by the majestic Gothic architecture and the twin copper spires soaring high above the city. It truly was a symbol of faith and community. The church was also a center of learning, offering a novitiate where young men could study and prepare for the priesthood. Imagine, young brothers training to become priests in this grand hall. Sadly, the church closed its doors in the late 1990s, but it still stands today, a reminder of the enduring legacy of the Catholic Church in Philadelphia. And maybe, just maybe, if you listen closely, you can still hear echoes of the brothers’ prayers, whispering through the rafters.
