In 1160, a small settlement nestled in the valley of the Bobritzsch, just five kilometers north of Freiberg, began to take shape. This settlement, known as Falkenberg, would become a vital part of the region’s history. 825 Jahre Falkenberg marks not a single structure, but the enduring spirit of this historic village. Falkenberg was first officially mentioned in 1350 as “Valkenberg”. Later records show “Falkemberg” in 1445 and “Falkenberg” in 1496. The name, meaning “Falcon Mountain”, likely refers to the sport of falconry practiced in the area or perhaps the presence of falcons themselves. In its early days, Falkenberg was likely under the control of the Bieberstein rulers. By the 14th and 15th centuries, it fell under the jurisdiction of the Freiberg Jungfrauenkloster (nunnery). By 1548, the Freiberg council held sway over the village. Falkenberg was more than just a farming village. The discovery of silver and copper deposits in 1512 led to a period of mining activity that lasted until 1838. A “Pochwerk”, a type of mill used for crushing ore, was established on the Bobritzsch river in 1567. Later, in 1715, the mining operations of the König-August-Erbstolln mine shifted from Niederschöna to the Falkenberg side of the valley. The industrious spirit of Falkenberg is also evident in its mills. Besides the Erblehnmühle, which was tied to the local court until 1545, the village also housed the Ölmühle (oil mill) and the Börnermühle, which ceased operations in 1947 and 1943, respectively. 825 Jahre Falkenberg also encapsulates the rich history of bridges that connected the community. A remarkable stone arch bridge, commissioned around 1567 by Elector August of Saxony, still stands today. Further down the Bobritzsch, the Schafbrücke (Sheep Bridge), one of the oldest bridges in the Freiberg mining region, served as a crossing for the flocks of nearby estates. Restored in 1983 and again in 2002 after flood damage, it remains a testament to the enduring legacy of Falkenberg. Nearby, the Salzbrücke (Salt Bridge) carried the vital salt trade route from Halle to Bohemia. These bridges, now protected historical monuments, were essential lifelines for the community and the broader region. Though Falkenberg officially became part of Conradsdorf in 1950, and later Halsbrücke in 1994, the celebration of “825 Jahre Falkenberg” serves as a powerful reminder of the independent spirit and rich history of this unique village.
