Standing here at 5480 Lake Murray Blvd it is time to talk about a beacon of faith. La Mesa First Assembly of God Church has a heart for the community. This multi-generational church welcomes all. It offers connection and support through various programs.
Life Groups create community. These groups offer a way to connect with others. Prayer Requests are handled by a dedicated team. The team prays for any need or concern. Kingdom Impact is a funding initiative. It supports important programs beyond normal generosity.
Dr. Leroy Bartel has prepared a Bible Reading Plan. It is called Necessary Food. It is available to the La Mesa First Assembly of God Church community. People can download a copy at no charge.
The church’s roots trace back to a split in La Mesa Assembly of God. This occurred in 1956. The new church opened on Echo Drive. It started with a small congregation of only 35 members. Years later George Gregg spoke at a Faith Chapel revival meeting. His words impressed Pastor Troy Blair. Poor health forced Blair to retire. He arranged for George to take his place. Pastor Gregg took over in 1963.
Whosoever will may come was lettered above the main doors. This was at the Echo Drive sanctuary. People from all backgrounds felt welcome. Through the Jesus movement the church grew. The charismatic revival followed. The congregation expanded from 200 to 3000. Worshippers filled the space. They even spilled out the doors. Plans emerged for a new facility. It would be on Campo Road behind the One Way Inn.
George Gregg served for 30 years. He later became a missions pastor. He passed the church leadership to his son Charlie.
Faith Chapel originated from La Mesa First Assembly of God. It experienced significant events. One event involved Dale Akiki. He was a member of the singles group. Akiki faced accusations of child molestation. This led to a trial that garnered media attention.
During the trial emotions ran high. The community was divided. Some believed in Akiki’s innocence. Others supported the children’s claims. The church leadership requested prayers. They sought truth and healing. Despite the controversy the church continued to serve.
