The Pacific Jewish Center’s story began in the 1940s. It was first established as Bay Cities Synagogue. At that time, several synagogues dotted Venice Beach. By the late 1960s, only two remained the Pacific Jewish Center and Mishkon Tefilo.

Membership dwindled. There were barely enough members for a minyan. But in 1977, a revival began. Michael Medved and Rabbi Daniel Lapin spearheaded the effort. They worried about the impact on birds and the beach’s aesthetics. Despite the opposition, the California Coastal Commission conditionally approved the project in 2006.
