Welcome to the Site of Mangwonjeong. It is designated as Seoul Monument No. 9. It is currently preserved as a historical site. Before we step inside, let’s take a moment to read the information sign. It will provide more context about this special place.
After you enter, you will find a guest book. Feel free to sanitize your hands and sign it. There are also information guides next to the guest book.
Now, let’s ascend these stone stairs. As you walk, feel the calmness that surrounds this place.
We’ve arrived at the pavilion. Mangwonjeong was built in a modest size. It is three squares at the front and two squares at the side. Notice the traditional patterns that decorate the interior. Look at the rafters, wooden pillars and wooden floor. Before stepping onto the pavilion, remember to remove your shoes and wear the slippers provided.
Inside the pavilion, you’ll see a signboard written “Huiujeong”. This name was given by King Sejong during the Joseon Dynasty. He visited the pavilion to check on the farmers. They were overjoyed by the welcome rain. “Huiujeong” means “happy to meet the rain”. Later, Grand Prince Wolsan renamed it as “Mangwonjeong”. It means “you can see the scenery that is far away”.
Imagine King Sejong here. He is observing the land and its people. Envision Grand Prince Wolsan renaming this place. Now, look out towards the Han River from the pavilion. Take in the quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Site of Mangwonjeong offers respite from the city’s hustle.
To continue your journey, consider visiting Mangwon Hangang Park. After coming down from the pavilion, walk along the road for about 10 minutes. Many people come here to enjoy their leisure time in Mangwon Hangang Park. Some sit on benches to rest. Some rent bikes and ride along the Han River. Others take walks with their pets. Remember to keep basic etiquette and care about others.
Sports facilities are also available here. There are sports equipment, a basketball court, a soccer field, and a volleyball court. If you wish to use the soccer field, basketball court or volleyball court, you have to make a reservation. Reservations are available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
