This school, nestled in the heart of Kyoto’s Fushimi Ward, isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a vibrant hub of activity, deeply woven into the fabric of the community. Momoyama Higashi Elementary School offers a glimpse into the daily lives of Kyoto’s younger generation. On February 21st, 2025, the fifth graders, along with the second, fourth, and sixth graders, participated in class observations. These observations, a chance for parents and community members to witness the growth and learning of the students, highlighted the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work. Many students, initially shy, found their voices through presentations and sharing their thoughts. This speaks volumes about the nurturing environment fostered at Momoyama Higashi Elementary School. The school isn’t just focused on academics. It encourages creative expression. An exhibition in the gymnasium showcased artwork from the students and children from a partner support school. Each piece reflects the unique perspectives and dedication of these young artists. There’s a palpable energy here. It’s a testament to the school’s commitment to holistic development. Beyond the classroom walls, the school is deeply engaged with its local community. The children of the fifth grade embarked on a field trip to the Kyoto City Museum of Art’s annex to see the “Small Giants Exhibition”. This exhibition wasn’t just for elementary school students. It included artwork from middle school students and collaborative pieces. The experience broadened their artistic horizons. It allowed them to see the possibilities that lay ahead in their own creative journeys. The same day, the first-grade students delved into the world of Japanese language arts, studying the story “Doubutsu no Akachan”. They compared lion cubs to other animal babies. They even learned about how to embody the word “big”. Even the youngest students at Momoyama Higashi Elementary are encouraged to explore and express themselves.
