Ever wonder where champions are made? Here at Ruderklub am Wannsee e.V. history merges with the pulse of modern athleticism.
Ruderklub am Wannsee e.V. is more than just a rowing club. It is a Berlin institution founded September 13 1906. Imagine eleven men meeting in Zehlendorf to create this club. They chose this location for its inspiring views of the Havel River.
Initially, Ruderklub am Wannsee e.V. was a men’s club. However, since 1974 women have been welcomed as members. Today, the club is one of the largest in Berlin. It boasts over 600 members.
The club has a rich history. In 1908, a clubhouse in the country house style was inaugurated here. Architect Walter Hackbarth designed it. The club also owns Kälberwerder Island. RaW member Albert Thiemt bought it in 1909. He gifted it to the club in 1926. The island has oaks planted to honor Olympic victories.
Ruderklub am Wannsee e.V. is divided into sections. These include performance sports, the main club, and Jung-RaW. The main club caters to adults and masters rowers. Jung-RaW is the youth section.
The Jung-RaW has about 110 members. It is one of Berlin’s largest youth rowing groups. They focus on competitions and excursions. Volunteers supervise children aged 10 to 18. The Jung-RaW won the “Senate Prize for the Best Youth Work in Berlin” multiple times.
The club’s training includes trips. The Jung-RaW embarks on two annual trips. A shorter spring trip covers 200 to 350 km locally. The summer trip lasts two weeks and covers up to 600 km. It often ends in a major European city.
Ruderklub am Wannsee e.V. has a strong tradition in competitive sports. Athletes regularly join national teams. They have won many national and international medals. Vladimir Vukelic coaches about 20 athletes.
Katrin Rutschow-Stomporowski won a gold medal in singles at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Julia Richter won a silver medal in the quadruple sculls at the 2012 London Olympics.
The club offers various activities. These include leisure rowing, competition rowing, and training on rowing machines. There is also youth training and masters rowing.
The club is a family club. Children and adults can learn to row here. The oldest beginner was 73 years old. This shows rowing can be enjoyed at any age.
The clubhouse veranda is perfect for summer evenings. Members relax and watch the sunset. The club also hosts events like the Pfingstkonzert on Whit Monday. Summer parties and special menus add to the club’s appeal.
From humble beginnings to Olympic glory, Ruderklub am Wannsee e.V. embodies the spirit of rowing. It combines tradition with a commitment to the future. It remains a vital part of Berlin’s sporting landscape.
