Amidst the quiet Hemmingen landscape stands the Katholische Pfarrkirche Johannes Bosco. A testament to faith and resilience it’s a story etched in brick and mortar. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a living record of a community’s journey.
The Katholische Pfarrkirche Johannes Bosco didn’t spring up overnight. Its roots trace back to a time when Catholics in southern Hanover lacked a proper place of worship. Imagine makeshift services. They were held in homes. Sometimes even in a bar. After World War II the influx of refugees intensified the need for a church. The existing churches were simply overflowing.
For years services were scattered. Hemmingen-Westerfeld Wilkenburg Arnum and Devese were initially served by other parishes. The growing Catholic population however necessitated a dedicated space. In 1960 a church named Herz Mariä was built. This temporary solution though proved insufficient.
The dream of a proper church in Arnum wasn’t realized until 1964. The different communities finally came together as their own parish. Pastor Erich Austen became the first leader of this newly formed parish. The first new priest Aloys Weber celebrated his first mass in the old St. Vitus Church in Wilkenburg in 1968. It’s a significant historical fact.
But even this new parish struggled. Services remained spread across various locations. A central church was desperately needed. The need for a larger church became clear. So did the need for a community center. The construction finally began in 1969.
Finally in 1973 the Katholische Pfarrkirche Johannes Bosco was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen. The name honors St John Bosco the founder of the Salesians. The church’s dedication embodies the spirit of the Salesian order which is dedicated to the welfare and education of young people.
The Katholische Pfarrkirche Johannes Bosco wasn’t simply built. It was a testament to perseverance. It represents the unity of several communities. It shows the dedication to faith and pastoral care. This is a unique piece of Hanover’s history. Its story is one of community resilience and faith in the face of adversity. A community which continues to thrive to this day.
