“Eighty-five years,” a wizened voice rasped, “eighty-five years of Durga Puja at Mudiali Club.” We stand before Mudiali Club, a place echoing with not just the festive spirit of Durga Puja, but also with whispers of community service and sporting triumphs. Mudiali Club, established in 1935, has woven itself into the fabric of Kolkata. Initially, a hub for physical exercise and a gathering point for Durga Puja, particularly during India’s struggle for independence, the club later blossomed into a sporting powerhouse. The late 60s and 70s saw Mudiali Club rise as a formidable force in cricket and football. Their name resonated through local leagues. They even clinched victories in prestigious tournaments like the John Shield Football Tournament and the Duncans Cup. Players who went on to represent giants like East Bengal and Mohun Bagan honed their skills right here on Mudiali Club’s grounds. But Mudiali Club didn’t limit itself to sports. They championed a variety of social initiatives. From celebrating the birthdays of freedom fighters and renowned poets to distributing warm clothes to those in need, Mudiali Club extended its hand to the community. They organized blood donation camps, free health check-ups, and eye camps. Even a quarter-finalist position in a 5-a-side football tournament organized by 24Ghanta in 2010 added another feather to their cap. Today, Mudiali Club continues to serve the community. Their activities span from tree plantation drives and maintaining a roadside rock garden to supporting the Deshapran Birendra Nath Institution For Boys. And of course, the grand Durga Puja celebrations remain a cornerstone of their identity, drawing a staggering 35 to 40 lakh visitors according to police records. Their Puja has garnered numerous awards, from Asian Paints’ Sharad Samman to accolades for safety, environment, and best pandal. Mudiali Club is more than just a club. It’s a testament to the spirit of community, a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of Kolkata.
