“Did the Edo period have delivery services?” a child’s voice piped up. We stand before Shōren-ji Temple in Osaka’s Konohana Ward, a place whose story begins in the Edo period. Specifically, between 1624 and 1645. A priest named Nichizō initially established a small temple here. Shōren-ji Temple wasn’t always the grand structure we might imagine from Edo-era tales. Its history, much like the flowing river nearby, has twists and turns. It once housed a seven-story pagoda and was considered one of Osaka’s twenty-five notable temples. Fires and earthquakes, however, took their toll, leaving only remnants of its former glory. The current main hall dates back to 1874. On August 26th each year, Shōren-ji Temple hosts the Kawase Gaki-dō, a vibrant festival designated as an intangible folk cultural asset by Osaka City. Imagine colorful streamers, sacred banners, and a mikoshi, or portable shrine, carrying Buddhist statues. This procession embarks from the Denpo Watergate, making its way down the river. The head priest chants sutras. Participants release wooden sticks into the river. It is a poignant reminder of the Buddhist practice of offering food to hungry ghosts, a way to ease suffering and gain spiritual merit. The Kawase Gaki-dō festival began in 1721 and is now one of Japan’s three major Segaki rituals. This tradition, held at Shōren-ji, connects us to the past. It offers a glimpse into Edo-era beliefs. It offers a vibrant spectacle of color and sound.
