Did the architects of the Christuskirche draw inspiration from the elegant structures of French Gothic architecture? Right here in front of you stands the Christuskirche. This stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture was completed in 1899. It was designed by the Leipzig architect Georg Weidenbach who won a design competition held in the summer of 1893. The competition was open to architects from all over Germany. Weidenbach’s design, with its cruciform floor plan and nods to early French Gothic, was a hit with the judges. Construction of the Christuskirche began in 1896. The artistic direction was overseen by Weidenbach while local architect Moritz Korn, a student of Johannes Otzen, took care of day-to-day building operations. The church we admire today was finally inaugurated in 1899. Sadly, the ravages of war did not spare the Christuskirche. Significant damage meant a simplified reconstruction. However, the church’s spirit remained undimmed. The Christuskirche’s resilience serves as a testament to its enduring importance to the community.
