Originally the British Factory House was established in Viana do Castelo in the 16th century. By 1727 it had a charter for a Porto location on Rua Nova dos Ingleses. The Feitoria was a symbol of this monopoly.

The Napoleonic Wars briefly interrupted operations. French troops occupied the Feitoria in 1807. It reopened with a grand celebration in 1811. It transformed into a private gentlemen’s club for British merchants. The Feitoria became more exclusive. It hosted grand balls for British residents excluding many Portuguese wine industry workers.

Even today the Feitoria Britânica maintains its traditions. Seven British Port companies hold membership. The house holds a weekly Wednesday luncheon. Members discuss business and taste vintage Ports blind. The treasurer chooses the vintage. Guests guess the vintage and the shipper.

The building itself is magnificent. Its Neo-Palladian design is striking. The austere granite facade is elegant. The imposing entrance hall with its high vaulted ceiling and granite columns is awe-inspiring. The open well staircase made of single granite pieces is remarkable. The library houses centuries-old books including first editions by Charles Dickens. The cellars hold 15,000 bottles of vintage Port wine. This is a secret space. Access is highly exclusive.

The Feitoria Britânica continues to thrive today. It hosts events and embodies its rich past. It serves as a symbol of the enduring relationship between Britain and Portugal.
