Beneath the whispering leaves of the Mu00fcggelspree-Lu00f6cknitzer Forest lies Flakensee, a shimmering expanse of water that has drawn Berliners to its shores for over 140 years. Flakensee first became a popular retreat in the early 1880s. Today, it remains a beloved escape from the city buzz, offering a blend of natural beauty and recreational delights. Flakensee covers 73 hectares and reaches depths of up to 8 meters. The lake’s clear waters, though not as pristine as some due to the presence of motorized boats, are regularly monitored and safe for swimming. The sandy beach at Flakensee, known as Weisser Strand Flakensee, offers free access, unlike some of Berlin’s other lakes. Its gentle slope into the water makes it ideal for families with children.

One of the unique charms of a visit to Flakensee is the journey itself. Take the historic Woltersdorf Tramway, Tram 87, from Rahndorf station. This charming tram line, established in 1913, offers a glimpse into the past as it rattles and shakes its way through the forest to Woltersdorf Schleuse. From there, a short 5-minute walk will bring you to the lake. At Woltersdorf Schleuse, you can witness the fascinating operation of the floodgate system. This “schleuse” allows boats to navigate between bodies of water with differing levels, acting like an aquatic elevator. Once used for transporting limestone, it now primarily serves leisure boats. Nearby, Cafe Knappe offers traditional German pastries.

Flakensee offers diverse activities beyond swimming. Rent a “grillboot,” a boat equipped with a barbecue grill, for a unique experience. Explore the interconnected lakes and canals by stand-up paddleboard. Hike or cycle through the surrounding forests, using trails mapped on Komoot. For a longer stay, camping is available at Camping Flakensee and Naturfreunde Springeberg, or rent a vacation home. Refuel at Restaurant & Cafu00e9 Flakenseeterrassen, a great spot to enjoy a meal and watch the sunset over the lake before returning to Berlin. Flakensee promises a memorable day trip, blending history, nature, and recreation into a delightful escape from the city.
