Why is Summit Presbyterian Church sometimes called a “taste and see” church? Well, here at the corner of Greene Street and Westview Avenue, the Summit Presbyterian Church has been a beacon of faith and community since the late 19th century. Founded in 1894 as a mission of the Second Presbyterian Church in Germantown, Summit Presbyterian Church initially hosted evening prayer meetings and a Sunday School. The congregation, diverse and spirited, quickly grew, leading to the construction of their first sanctuary in 1895. As the neighborhood flourished, so did the church, resulting in a new sanctuary and education wing added in 1927. This expansion allowed the church to open its doors to the wider community. Today, Summit Presbyterian Church shares its space with the P’nai Or Jewish Renewal congregation, the Free to Be Performing Arts Center, and other community groups. This spirit of inclusivity extends to their motto, encouraging those curious about faith to “taste and see” the welcoming community within its walls.
