“A gift to Wellesley” whispers the pink granite. This is Wellesley Town Hall. It stands proudly at 525 Washington Street. A prominent landmark in Hunnewell Park.

Horatio Hollis Hunnewell. A name synonymous with this magnificent building. He not only funded its construction but also donated the land. His generosity shaped the heart of Wellesley. The building’s east end opened in 1883. It housed the public library. Hunnewell funded its initial collection too.

Designed by Shaw & Hunnewell. Father and son-in-law. They blended Richardsonian Romanesque style with French Chateau influences. This created a unique architectural masterpiece. The result is a polychromatic blend of pink granite and brownstone trim. It’s strikingly beautiful.

The town hall addition to the west followed a few years later. The entire complex became solely town offices in 1959. The library moved then. A new building welcomed bookworms in 2003. It stands across the street. A modern contrast to the historic town hall.

The Wellesley Town Hall is more than just offices. It’s a testament to generosity. It reflects architectural innovation. It’s a symbol of community. It’s a treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was added in 1976. It continues to serve the town. Come marvel at its grandeur. Step inside. Feel its history resonate. The Wellesley Town Hall. A gift that keeps on giving.
