Can a house whisper secrets of art and nature? Here at Maison Langbehn, it certainly seems so. Built in 1901 by architect Jean Van Hall, Maison Langbehn stands as a testament to the elegant beauty of Art Nouveau. The house breathes with the spirit of Roger Langbehn, the artist who tragically died in World War I. His mother acquired the house in 1926. It became a sanctuary where the echoes of his artistry found a new home. Maison Langbehn isn’t just a building. It’s a living canvas. The facade is a symphony of yellow, orange, and white bricks, accented with white and blue stone. Look closely at the sgraffito work around the windows, delicate floral motifs attributed to Adolphe Crespin. Notice the intricate ironwork. A butterfly design graces the basement grilles, mirrored in the interior’s stairwell. It’s a recurring motif, whispering of transformation and rebirth. The stained glass, some attributed to Raphaël Évrard, casts a warm glow. A dragonfly motif in one window hints at the ever-changing nature of art and life. Inside, a Neo-Flemish Renaissance fireplace dominates the salon. A small loggia, originally a WC, adds a touch of whimsy. Today, Maison Langbehn houses the Association Roger Langbehn for education through the arts and the respect for nature. Françoise-Emmanuelle Denis, whose family owned the house after Roger’s mother, has lovingly restored it. She has breathed new life into its walls. The house hosts artistic performances and educational activities. Maison Langbehn continues to inspire. It connects the past with the present. It reminds us of the power of art and the importance of respecting nature. It’s a place where whispers of history intertwine with the vibrant energy of creativity.
