A towering presence in Madrid’s Arganzuela district. That’s Torre Ombú. Its history isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a tale of transformation. Originally built in 1905 by architect Luis de Landecho. Torre Ombú once powered the neighborhood. It stood tall. A testament to industrial might. Yet time marched on. The building fell into disuse. Threatened with demolition.
Then ACCIONA stepped in. In 2017 they purchased Torre Ombú. They envisioned something more than rubble. They saw a sustainable future. A chance to revitalize this area of Madrid.
Foster + Partners took on the ambitious challenge. Their vision? Transform Torre Ombú into a beacon of sustainable design. They kept the original structure. That meant preserving over 10000 tonnes of original brick. A monumental effort to reduce environmental impact. They inserted a lightweight timber structure inside. This new heart of Torre Ombú used sustainably sourced wood from local forests. It’s recyclable. It’s demountable. This ingenious design saved more than 1600 tonnes of CO2.
But the smart-aleck knowledge is this. Torre Ombú is more than just a building. It’s a statement. Its ecological footprint? A remarkable 1.0. This means Torre Ombú’s carbon emissions are absorbed by the Earth’s capacity. It achieves the balance needed by the Paris Agreement. Its environmental impact aligns with the original 2 degree Celsius aim. The design reduces embodied carbon by 25 percent. Operational energy? 35 percent below normal expectations.
A central skylight floods the interior with natural light. Photovoltaic glazing generates electricity. A new courtyard invites work outdoors. It connects to a sprawling 12400 square-meter park. Three hundred and fifty trees offer shade and tranquility. Local species were carefully chosen to reduce water use. This green oasis unites the building with its community.
Torre Ombú isn’t just an office building. It’s a park. It’s a symbol of progress. It’s a testament to ingenuity and a sustainable future. It’s a must-see. A reminder that even in the heart of a bustling city. Renewal and sustainability can thrive. So here we stand. Before this impressive symbol of a transformed Madrid.
