Can you imagine a sanctuary very dear to a future pope? This is Santuario Santa Maria delle Stelle. It stands in a commanding position. It is between Concesio, Cellatica, and Gussago.

Let’s explore the story of this sacred place. Construction began in 1537. It took about two years to complete. The Montini family held this site in high regard. Young Giovan Battista Montini dreamed of living here. He wanted to settle near the Madonna Della Stella after his diplomatic career.

But destiny had other plans for Montini. In 1963, he became Pope Paul VI. He was beatified in 2014. Pope Francis declared him a saint in 2018.

The Santuario Santa Maria delle Stelle has an imposing design. It is a compact building. Its exterior lacks particular decorations. A high scarp wall surrounds the entire perimeter. This design draws inspiration from military constructions.

Now, let’s step inside. The art here is just as defining as the architecture. The presbytery features a monumental Baroque altar. Statues of saints and cherubs adorn it. These are likely from the Callegari workshop.

An impressive wooden altarpiece dominates the back wall. A Brescian master crafted it in the late 16th century. It frames the painting of the Madonna and Child. Girolamo da Romano, called “il Romanino”, created this masterpiece. At the top of the wall, a large lunette displays a fresco. Antonio Gandino painted the Virgin of the Assumption. It complements the elegant ceiling. The ceiling features mixtilinear coffers.

Did you know this site is part of the “Sacred and Art Route”? It is part of the Ecomuseum of Valle Trompia. It is called The Mountain and Industry. Santuario Santa Maria delle Stelle is more than a building. It’s a journey through faith, art, and history. It connects us to a future saint.
