Did you know Cleveden Secondary School has a fascinating history? It’s right here before us. This impressive building wasn’t always a school for both boys and girls. Cleveden Secondary School actually traces its roots back to 1894. That’s when the Glasgow High School for Girls opened its doors. Imagine those early students in a very different Glasgow.
For many years it served only girls. Then in 1973 something remarkable happened. The school started accepting boys. In 1975 it was officially renamed Cleveden Secondary School. This wasn’t just a name change. It marked a significant shift in education in this part of Glasgow. It signified a move towards more inclusive education.
Cleveden Secondary School didn’t stay the same. Between 1998 and 2001 it merged with North Kelvinside Secondary School. That resulted in the Cleveden we see today. A bigger school serving even more students. The merging of schools combined resources and traditions. The combined strength proved beneficial.
The school didn’t just merge. It also underwent a major transformation. In 2002 First Minister Jack McConnell officially reopened the school. An extensive renovation and extension project had been completed. The updated Cleveden boasts a state-of-the-art building. Thirty-one classrooms now stand ready. There are also cutting-edge facilities. Eight dedicated ICT teaching areas are available. Ten science labs and a swimming pool are impressive additions. The renovations also included the creation of a new social space and a revamped library.
Cleveden’s achievements extend beyond its bricks and mortar. In 2016 two students won £1000. Their prize resulted from participation in the Bloodhound Racecar Challenge. It was an impressive accomplishment that showcased student talent. It brought honor to the school and the community.
