“The Church of Unlimited Love”. Does that sound intriguing? We are standing before the Mount Zion Congregation. It is a place with a history of moves and mergers.

The Mount Zion Congregation has a complex past. The congregation was first organized in 1897. But the American Jewish Year Book lists its founding as 1888. The original location was on 113th Street near Madison Avenue. They were there from 1897 to 1901.

From 1901 to 1926, they resided at 37 West 119th Street. A merger happened next. Mount Zion joined with Peni-El Congregation. Together, they formed the Unity Synagogue. This was at 130 West 79th Street from 1926 to 1927.

The Unity Synagogue split after only a year. Mount Zion then worshipped at 150 West 135th Street. This lasted from 1927 to 1929. Another merger occurred with the Temple of the Covenant. They met at 612 West 180th Street from 1929 to 1936.

This merger ended in 1937. Mount Zion reclaimed its name. They worshipped at 257 West 93rd Street from 1937 to 1938. In 1938, they moved to 135 West 70th. Currently, Mount Zion AME Church is located at 1765 Madison Avenue.

Mount Zion has been listed in various publications. The American Jewish Year Book listed it in 1900-1901 and 1907-1908. It also appeared in the Jewish Communal Register in 1917-1918.

Today, Mount Zion AME Church is active. You can contact them about volunteer opportunities. They also have fundraising events. You can also support their mission. The Mount Zion AME Church is “The Church of Unlimited Love.” It continues to serve its community with various events. These include worship services and bible studies.
