Built in 1937 the Eglise Saint-Jean Chrysostome stands proudly. It’s a testament to the enduring faith of the Melkite Greek Catholic community in Brussels. This beautiful church located at 41 Rue de l’Orient in Etterbeek wasn’t always here. Its history is one of perseverance and eventual triumph.

Initially the Melkite Greek Catholic community in Brussels worshipped elsewhere. They longed for their own dedicated space. This desire intensified over time. The search for a suitable location proved challenging. Finding a suitable building in the bustling city was difficult.

Then a remarkable opportunity arose. In 1995 the church found a home. It was the Chapelle de Marie Immaculée. It stood vacant after its chaplain retired. The location was serendipitous. It was on Rue de l’Orient a street name almost prophetic for this community.

The Eglise Saint-Jean Chrysostome wasn’t merely a new building. It was a symbol. The transformation of this existing building was more than just bricks and mortar. It represented the community’s enduring spirit. Generosity from Patriarch Maximos V and others made the transformation possible. A stunning iconostasis now graces the interior. It’s decorated with icons painted by a Liège workshop.

The consecration of the Eglise Saint-Jean Chrysostome in October 1996 was a momentous occasion. Patriarch Maximos V presided over the ceremony. It marked a new chapter in the history of the Melkite Greek Catholic community in Brussels.

Today the Eglise Saint-Jean Chrysostome continues to thrive. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. It offers Arabic classes for children and adults. It holds youth meetings and catechism classes. The church hosts community meals celebrating Saint John Chrysostom’s feast day. It also conducts clothing and toy drives for those in need. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. The Eglise Saint-Jean Chrysostome is much more than just a place of worship. It’s a vital part of the cultural fabric of Brussels. It serves as a beacon for the Melkite Greek Catholic community. Its beautiful architecture and its enduring story make it a truly special place.
