Borba de Godim. Ever wondered where such a unique name originates? Let’s uncover its history together. Borba de Godim was once known as São Miguel de Borba de Godim. This area’s story stretches back centuries.

Borba de Godim’s name is derived from two sources. Borba is from the Celtic god of waters. Godim comes from Goodwin, a Suevian proprietor. This blend of cultures shaped its identity.

In the 9th century, D. Arnufo da Costa Baião sought refuge here. He was a Duke of Espoleto and a great-grandson of Charlemagne. He offered his services to King Bermudo III. The king rewarded him with lands. These lands included Baião and areas between Tâmega and Douro rivers.

Arnufo married D. Ufa. Her father was Goivinho, the Count of Lugo. They settled near the Tâmega River. They named the settlement Borba. Arnufo ordered the construction of a Romanesque church. He dedicated it to their patron saint. He also founded Arnoia Castle and the Palace of Borba.

In 1191, D. Gomes Mendes Gedeão appeared. He sought patronage of Borba de Godim. The abbot refused him lodging because of his large company. Enraged, the nobleman burned the parish residence and church.

As punishment, the Pope ordered him to found another church. It was to be dedicated to São Miguel. This was the patron saint of Borba de Godim. He complied by building the S. Miguel de Lobrigos church.

The reconstruction date of Borba de Godim’s church is debated. However, evidence suggests it was rebuilt in the 18th century. Borba de Godim was a parish of Felgueiras. In 2013, it merged with Vila Cova da Lixa. Together, they formed Vila Cova da Lixa e Borba de Godim.

Today Borba de Godim is a part of Lixa city. It retains its unique history and cultural significance. Its story involves Celtic gods, Suevian landowners, and noble quests. Borba de Godim is a place where legends come alive.
