Lost in the elegant maze of Brussels’ Place du Sablon stands the Fountain of Minerva. Its water trickles faintly now a shadow of its past glory. This unassuming fountain holds a captivating story.

The Fountain of Minerva wasn’t always a quiet observer. It once quenched the thirst of the entire neighborhood. Its creation is linked to a fascinating exile. Thomas Bruce the Third Earl of Elgin a Scottish aristocrat sought refuge in Brussels in 1696. He escaped a death sentence for treason in his homeland.

He found solace in Brussels marrying a Belgian woman Charlotte Countess of Esneux. He described her as a virtuous woman a stark contrast to her mother. Tragedy struck when Charlotte died in 1710 at just 31 years old.

Lord Bruce remained in Brussels. He found happiness there. He eventually received word it was safe to return to Britain. However he chose to stay. He lived out his days in Brussels passing away in December 1741.

As a token of gratitude for the city’s hospitality Lord Bruce commissioned the Fountain of Minerva. It was completed in 1751 after his death. The fountain’s sculpture depicts Minerva the Roman goddess of wisdom and war. Notice Minerva is missing her nose. Intriguing isn’t it?

The shield Minerva points to reveals more secrets. It bears the weathered busts of Empress Maria Theresa and her husband Francis of Lorraine. They granted Lord Bruce asylum a significant act of kindness. The fountain stands as a silent thank you a testament to hospitality and an enduring friendship between a city and an exiled lord. The Fountain of Minerva is more than just a pretty sight it’s a tangible piece of Brussels’ rich and often surprising history.
