Built in 1843 it replaced a much older Haus Mickeln dating back to 1210. That original building was tragically destroyed by fire in 1836. Undeterred Duke Prosper Ludwig von Arenberg used insurance money to commission the renowned architect Josef Niehaus. Niehaus cleverly used engravings of 16th-century villas designed by Galeazzo Alessi as inspiration.

Schloss Mickeln’s design is remarkable. It’s a perfect square each side measuring 19.55 meters. All four sides are nearly identical a feat of architectural symmetry. Only an outside staircase on the northern side breaks this pattern. The approach to the entrance is lined with lime trees a concept dating back to 1843 when Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe designed the surrounding gardens. Some of these original trees including plane trees European beeches and two majestic Lebanon cedars still stand today. These cedars are even considered natural monuments of Dusseldorf. The building’s cubic structure is completed by a triglyph-metope frieze and a flat pavilion roof. The structure itself shows the influence of late classicism. A perfect example of how the past shapes the present.
