How did people get around before cars? The Tranvia Cusano-Cinisello-Monza reminds us of a time before cars dominated the streets. This interurban tramway, operational from 1890 to 1918, connected Cusano Milanino to Monza. The Tranvia Cusano-Cinisello-Monza was originally part of a longer line that extended from Monza to Carate. The line was built by The Lombardy Road Railways Company Ltd. They envisioned a tramway that would facilitate travel and trade between these towns. The Tranvia Cusano-Cinisello-Monza was primarily a freight line, transporting goods like textiles and agricultural products. It played a crucial role in the region’s economic development. However, after World War I the Lombardy Road Railways Company faced financial difficulties. They were forced to cease operations of the Tranvia Cusano-Cinisello-Monza in 1918. Although the tracks remained for some years, the line was never revived. Eventually, the tracks were removed, leaving behind only fragments of its existence. The Tranvia Cusano-Cinisello-Monza may be gone, but its story is a reminder of the ingenuity and ambition that characterized early 20th century transportation.
