Perched amidst the waters, Xiaogushan stands as a testament to nature’s artistry. But what secrets does this rock hill hold?

Xiaogushan, also known as Little Orphan, is a rock hill in the middle of the Yangtze River. It is located in Anhui province in East China. Its name suggests that it stands alone in the river. The “Little” in its name differentiates it from Great Orphan in Poyang Lake.

Imagine this: it’s the late 19th or early 20th century. You’re a Western traveler sailing along the Yangtze. Xiaogushan is a frequently written about and photographed landmark.

Formed during the quaternary glaciation, this hill rises 78 meters above sea level. During the dry season, it links to the north bank becoming a peninsula. Look closely. You’ll spot a Buddhist monastery and a Mazu temple on the mountainside. A pavilion graces the hilltop.

Xiaogushan has earned recognition as an AAA-rated tourist attraction. Thousands of tourists and pilgrims visit yearly. Its fame extends into Chinese classic literature.

Lu You’s travels feature Xiaogushan. His work has even been included in high school textbooks. More recently, it appeared in the 2016 Chinese film Crosscurrent.

Interestingly, there’s another Xiaogushan. This one is a late Paleolithic site in Liaoning province. It dates back 40,000 to 20,000 years. Remember, China is vast. Place names often repeat.

Our Xiaogushan is more than just a scenic spot. It embodies history, culture, and natural wonder. It’s a place where literature meets landscape. It is a destination for spiritual seekers and curious travelers alike.

As you stand here remember the stories. Remember the travelers who gazed upon this view. Think of the pilgrims who climbed its slopes. Xiaogushan is a symbol of enduring beauty and cultural significance. It is a landmark etched in time.
