Stepping into the embrace of St. Peter Claver Church is like stepping back in time. It whispers stories of resilience, faith, and the unwavering pursuit of equality. St. Peter Claver Church stands as a beacon of hope. It was founded in 1921 as the first parish for Black Catholics in the Diocese of Brooklyn. The church’s story intertwines with the story of Msgr. Bernard Quinn, a champion of African American rights. He saw the injustice faced by Black Catholics who were often excluded from worshiping alongside their white counterparts. He envisioned a space where they could freely practice their faith, a sanctuary of belonging. In 1920, with the support of Bishop McDonnell, Msgr. Quinn embarked on his mission. He walked the streets of Brooklyn, seeking out Black Catholics and inviting them to join his ministry. Divine providence led him to Jules DeWeever, the founder of the Colored Catholic Club. This connection rekindled the hopes of a dedicated community. They found a home for their church, a former storage depot in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The building had a rich history. It served as a Congregationalist church, then an Episcopalian church, and later a Baptist church. On Christmas Day 1921, St. Peter Claver Church was officially founded. The cornerstone was laid, marking a new chapter in the diocese’s history. By 1922, the church was completed and blessed by Bishop Molloy. In 1931, St. Peter Claver Institute was built next to the church. It housed a school, a recreation center, and a convent for the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. The school gym also served as a performance hall. One notable performer was Savannah Churchill, an R&B singer who honed her talents in the church choir. St. Peter Claver Church’s influence extended beyond its walls. Msgr. Quinn introduced a novena to St. Thérèse of Lisieux, drawing people of all backgrounds to the church. The church fostered a strong sense of community. The St. Vincent de Paul Society provided charitable support, and the Holy Name Society empowered Black Catholic men to spread the Gospel. St. Peter Claver Church merged with other parishes in 2007 to form St. Martin de Porres Parish. Yet, the spirit of St. Peter Claver Church lives on. It remains a testament to the enduring legacy of Msgr. Quinn and the unwavering faith of its community.
