Is it possible for a temple to embody both imperial grandeur and serene spirituality? Yes. Daikaku-ji Temple does exactly that. It is located in Okusaga Kyoto. We are standing before a site with ties to the Imperial family and a history stretching back 1200 years.
Daikakuji Temple began as Emperor Saga’s villa in the early Heian period. Later it transformed into a temple in 876. Kobo Daishi Kukai practiced religious rituals here. The temple showcases imperial-style buildings. Its grounds blend history and culture.
Let’s delve into Daikakuji Temple’s story. Emperor Saga built the Saga-in villa in the Sagano area. Kobo Daishi built Gokakuin within the villa housing the Five Great Wisdom Kings. He performed religious rites there.
In 818 a great famine struck. Emperor Saga copied the Heart Sutra at Kukai’s urging. Tradition says this act ended the epidemic. The handwritten sutra remains at the temple’s Shingyoden hall. It is displayed publicly once every sixty years. Pilgrims still copy the sutra here. Their copies are kept with the original.
After Emperor Saga’s death his daughter Princess Masako converted the villa into Daikakuji Temple. Prince Kojaku Nyudo became its founder. Daikakuji Temple became a monzeki temple. This meant only imperial princes could be appointed abbot. Over time it became a retirement home for emperors. Emperors Go-Saga Kameyama and Go-Uda resided here. They continued to wield power. This was known as cloistered rule.
The temple burned down in 1336. This occurred during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. It was later rebuilt. During the Edo period Emperor Go-Mizunoo brought in Momoyama period buildings. These came from the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The hondo or main hall was moved too. The main images represent the Five Wisdom Kings. They center on Fudo.
Osawa Pond stretches out on the east side. Emperor Saga commissioned it. He modeled its gardens after Lake Dongting in China. It features approximately 700 cherry trees and maples. The pond is Japan’s oldest artificial garden.
Kano Sanraku painted sliding door paintings in the Shoshinden’s Okanmuri-no-ma room. They depict peony trees and plum blossoms. These works are Important Cultural Properties.
