Following the Easter Rising’s failure Ó Maoilíosa escaped to the United States. He worked with John Devoy. Together they prepared for Éamon de Valera’s fundraising tour of America. This tour took place between 1919 and 1920. Ó Maoilíosa played a significant role in securing funds and resources for the Irish struggle.
His return to Ireland coincided with the outbreak of the Anglo-Irish War. He served as the IRA’s Director of Supplies. This position was vital for acquiring much-needed weapons and materials. He was also elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) to the First Dáil in 1918. He represented both Galway East and Meath North.
The Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 was a major point of contention. Ó Maoilíosa strongly opposed the treaty viewing it as a betrayal of the Irish Republic. His passionate speeches against the treaty highlight his commitment to a fully independent Ireland.
During the Irish Civil War Ó Maoilíosa and his comrades occupied the Four Courts. After a fierce battle they surrendered. Sadly Ó Maoilíosa along with other prominent anti-Treaty IRA leaders was executed in December 1922. His death cemented his status as a martyr for the cause of Irish independence.
