A goat’s accidental discovery. That’s how it all began for the Spilaio Karakobouniou. Can you imagine a goat leading us to one of Athens’ hidden gems?

This remarkable cave near Athens is more than just a hole in the ground. The Spilaio Karakobouniou is the largest known cave in Attica a stunning natural wonder. Discovered in 1926 its impressive interior wasn’t fully explored until two years later. A goat’s unfortunate tumble revealed its entrance a small gap in the roof. Shepherds found the surprisingly unharmed goat. This led to the cave’s eventual discovery.

The Spilaio Karakobouniou’s interior is breathtaking. Imagine vast chambers approximately 60 by 60 meters. Stone blocks divide the space into smaller areas. Tectonic activity created cracks in the rock. The cave’s beauty lies in its rich stone decoration a magnificent display of stalactites and stalagmites. The colors are incredible varying due to the action of oxides. A truly majestic atmosphere.

Today visitors enter through an artificial tunnel 17 meters long. This makes access much easier. The tourist route itself is 350 meters. The original natural entrance remains high above on the cave’s roof. The cave is part of the metamorphic limestone layers of Hymettus. Like most caves it formed due to karst phenomena. Limestone dissolves in water containing carbon dioxide. Tectonic processes also played a role. The Spilaio Karakobouniou’s temperature is consistently around 17 degrees Celsius. Humidity hovers near 90 percent. Air quality is surprisingly good with carbon dioxide levels at 400 ppm and oxygen at 19 percent.

The Spilaio Karakobouniou has undergone renovations. The Ephorate of Paleoanthropology and Speleology worked on this project. Their innovative methods helped preserve the cave’s delicate decorations. The cave is now an established tourist attraction though still relatively unknown. It’s a fantastic detour especially if you are heading to or from Eleutherios Venizelos Airport.

A tour of the Spilaio Karakobouniou lasts about 20 minutes. Knowledgeable guides offer presentations in Greek and English. They cover the cave’s history geology and morphology. Afterward you can enjoy the incredible view of Peania and the eastern suburbs of Athens.

So take a moment. Breathe in the air. Imagine the goat. Imagine the explorers. Imagine yourself stepping into the Spilaio Karakobouniou a hidden wonder waiting to be explored.
